William J. Schaeffer, Jr., 90, formerly of Wyomissing, passed away January 8, 2016, at the Keystone Villa in Douglassville.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Louise (nee Trostle), and sister, Katharine McCarthy.
Bill grew up in Reading, where his family owned Schaeffer's Dry Goods, and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School. He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific theater on the aircraft carrier USS Essex as an aviation radioman/rear gunner. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and several air medals. After the Navy, he attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1950. He worked at the family store and as a real estate appraiser. Bill loved his family, traveling around the country, vacationing in Ocean City, NJ with his family, and Notre Dame football.
Bill is survived by his children, Victoria S. Kimble (Bruce) of Alexandria, VA; Sally S. Sessler (James) of Laconia, NH; and W. John (Laura) of West Chester, PA; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday, January 16, at 1:00 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Burial will be at St. John's (Hain's) Church Cemetery.
