William A. Hauptly

William A. Hauptly, 86, of Caernarvon Township, passed away April 28, 2014 in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

He was the husband of Dorothy (Reber) Hauptly, whom he married almost 65 years ago on May 21, 1949.

Born March 22, 1928 in Pottsville, he was a son of the late Alfred M. and Kathryn R. (Klitsch) Hauptly.

He was a graduate of Pottsville High School.

William worked in the Anthracite coal mines and then in mechanical maintenance for several companies including: Grace Mine, Bethlehem Steel, and the Pottstown School District where he was Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.

He was a member of St. Benedict's R.C. Church, Mohnton, where he served as usher for several years.

William was very involved in Boy Scouts of America. He proudly served as a webelo and scout leader for many years, and took his troops on trips all over the country and Canada. Together with his son's troop they built a cabin that still stands on his property today.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his two children: James A., husband of Eileen Hauptly, Wernersville; and Duane A. Hauptly, Morgantown. Also surviving are his five siblings: Rose Shaffer, Baltimore, MD; Agnes Weber, FL; Laura Andrews, Souderton; Alfred L. Hauptly, Pottsville; and Marie Plasha, Sinking Spring. Four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.

William was predeceased by his sisters: Alfredine Hauptly, and Barbara Weiss, and his brother, Gerald J. Hauptly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St Benedict's R.C. Church, 2020 Chestnut Hill Rd, Mohnton, PA 19540. Viewings will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading; and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in Caernarvon Cemetery.
