William "Bill" Frey Buchanan, Jr., 84, formerly of Wyomissing, PA, passed away on August 29, 2025 at Hermitage Deep Run in Henrico, VA, where he resided. He was the beloved husband of Diane M. (Taylor) Buchanan. They shared 51 years of marriage full of love and wonderful memories.
Born in Reading, PA on August 18, 1941, he was the son of the late William F. Buchanan, Sr. and G. Arline (Hummel) Buchanan. Bill was a graduate of Reading High School in 1959. He received his psychology degree from Muhlenberg College and his teaching certification from Albright College. In addition, he did graduate work at Temple University, and he received his master's degree in guidance and counseling from Kutztown State College. He then got his principalship from the University of Pennsylvania.
Bill dedicated his career to education. He was a teacher, then guidance counselor, and then Vice Principal of Reading High School. He retired after 40 years of dedication to the Reading School District. After retirement, he was President of the Reading Berks School Employees Credit Union for several years.
Bill also had a passion for football. He served as a PIAA football official for 50 years. He also refereed football games at the Division II and Division III level. In addition to football, he also coached cross country and track and field at his alma mater.
In addition to his loving wife, Bill is survived by his two sons: Christopher T. Buchanan, husband of Lisa Buchanan, and Ryan W.C. Buchanan, husband of Hilary Buchanan. He stayed young by watching his seven grandchildren, Aria, Jackson, Riley, Brody, Cameron, Grayson, and Caden grow up.
The funeral service for Bill will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Kuhn Funeral Home & Crematory at 5153 Kutztown Rd, Temple, PA 19560, with entombment to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery. Family and friends can gather for a visitation at 10:00 AM.
