Wallburga ("Wally") E. Weber, 71, of Wyomissing Hills, went home to her Lord on February 25 in the Highlands Skilled Nursing Center at the end of a 12-year battle with cancer.
Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Josef C. and Elfriede W. (Zoeller) Mank.
Wally received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Gettysburg College in 1963. While working for a year at Pfizer Laboratories in Brooklyn, NY, Wally earned her master of arts in teaching degree from New York University. Upon completion, she began her cherished lifelong career as a science teacher at Brooklyn Friends School. Following her marriage, and a year teaching at Lawrence Junior School in Lawrence Township, NJ, Wally became a stay-at-home mother after the birth of her daughter. During the next 10 years, Wally tutored, taught evenings at RACC, and served as an interim teacher of chemistry at Wilson High School. In 1978, Wally began her 30-year career teaching chemistry at Conrad Weiser High School, a true labor of love. Beyond her classroom, she was dedicated to her students in countless ways including serving as the advisor for the National Honor Society. Quite simply, Wally loved her students and was born to teach.
In addition to her devotion to education, Wally was an avid traveler, gardener, and devoted grandmother. Following her retirement in 2008, Wally became an even more enthusiastic traveler and had many, many adventures exploring the USA, Canada and Bermuda with her husband, Oscar W. Weber. They both loved art, classical music, theater, history, nature and taking their two daily two-mile walks together.
In addition to her husband, Wally is survived by her daughter Laura Weber, partner of Jennifer Hutchison, and granddaughter Elizabeth of Philadelphia; sister Irene Morganson of Bend, Oregon; two nephews, one niece, two grandnephews and one grandniece.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Boulevard, Wyomissing, PA, where Wally was a long-time very active member. Interment at Pleasant View Cemetery Mausoleum will be private. There will be no viewing.
In celebration of Wally's enthusiasm and support for women in science and in recognition of the superb education she received at her beloved alma mater which set the stage for her lifelong teaching career, the family has suggested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Wally's memory to the Chemistry Department at: Gettysburg College Campus Box 423 300 N. Washington St. Gettysburg, PA 17325
