W. Lewis Mengel, 94, a resident of Phoebe Berks Village, Wernersville, formerly of Kent Way, West Reading, died Aug. 7 at 3:20 p.m. in the Phoebe Home, Allentown, where he had resided since July 22.
He was the husband of Evelyn M. (Stauffer) Mengel.
Born in Reading, he was a son of the late William E. and Carrie (Schmehl) Mengel.
Mengel was the owner and operator of W. L. Mengel Co., West Reading, for 40 years, retiring in 1973.
He graduated from Reading High School in 1924 and Wharton School of Business, Reading, in 1927.
A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, he was a past vice president, secretary and treasurer of the church council and an usher.
Mengel was a 60-year member of Camp 68, Patriotic Order Sons of America, Hyde Park, where he was a past president, vice president and treasurer and recording secretary for 30 years. He was voted the county's POSA Man of the Year for 1987.
He was also a 75-year member and 32nd degree Mason of Isaac Hiester Lodge 660 F&AM, West Reading.
Mengel is also survived by a daughter, Suzanne G. Mengel, and a son, William L., both of Reading.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Phoebe Berks Chapel. Burial will be private in Laureldale Cemetery, Tuckerton. Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., Laureldale, is in charge of arrangements.
