Virginia Grace Tingwall, 85, of Reading, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, in the care of Penn State. St. Joseph Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late George A. and Virginia G. (Browne) Culbert, Virginia Grace graduated from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in 1955. After graduating, she was employed by Mobil Oil Company in New York City where she met and married Henry Tingwall, a NYC policeman. They shared their lives for over 20 years.
Virginia lived on Long Island before moving to Montana and was a loving mother to four sons, of whom she was very proud. She was a homemaker, a talented cook, and excellent baker. In her spare time, she loved to read and write wonderful stories and poignant reflections on Christian faith.
Virginia came to Reading to be near her mother and sister, and she volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital and St. Mary's Shelter. A woman of deep faith, she was most recently a member of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church of Reading. Virginia touched many lives in her community with her faith, love, caring, and generosity. She was loved and described by many as a beautiful person. Her radiant spirit will live on in the hearts of all those who knew her. To all those who knew her, she wrote: "Death is nothing. I have only slipped away…" and "My vocation is prayer. I will continue to pray for you now and always!"
Left to treasure Virginia's memory are her sons, Steven F. Tingwall of Bayfield, CO, and Douglas F. Tingwall (Linda) of Kemmerer, WY; her grandchildren, Jennifer, Jack-Henry, Lexie, Jenna, and Dani; and her sisters, Patricia A. Grace (James) of Springfield, VA, and Eileen F. LaFata (Paul) of Wyomissing. Virginia was predeceased by her sons, Thomas F. Tingwall and Andrew F. Tingwall, and her brother, George A. Culbert.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Virginia's memory may be offered to Mercy Homes for Boys and Girls, 1140 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL, 60607. Donations may be made online at www.mercyhome.org.
