Virginia Ruth (Goelz) Stephan, 89, Reading, died July 5 in Berks Heim, where she had resided since June 14. She was the wife of Gustave A. Stephan, who died in 1990. They had been married for 49 years.
Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Frederick W. and Edna A. (Moyer) Goelz.
Stephan was last employed as a bookkeeper by the Muhlenberg School District, retiring in 1978 after working 21 years.
She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Reading, and was a 1934 graduate of Reading High School.
Stephan was a member of the auxiliary of the Historical Society of Berks County and the Berks County chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.
She is survived by a nephew, Frederick J. Goelz, and a niece, Sara Jane Goelz-Anderson, both of Reading; and three grand nephews: Erik W. Goelz, Philadelphia; Gregory E. Anderson, Santa Monica; and Alexandr E. Goelz, Phoenix.
From Gustave's family, she is survived by three nephews: Grant Goeltz, Wyomissing; David Unger, Leesport; and Dennis Unger, Robesonia; and two nieces, Marilyn Henson and Cherylin Unger, and many grand nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Edward F. Goelz, and a niece, Judith Dorward.
Memorial services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading, the Rev. Jeffrey Raffauf officiating. Burial will be private in Laureldale Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Historical Society of Berks County, 940 Centre Ave., Reading, PA 19601.
