Violet M. Hoffman

Vi "Skip" Violet M. Hoffman, 92, passed away May 28, 2011, surrounded by her loving family in her Spring Township residence.

Her husband, Henry F. "Hank" Hoffman, Jr., died May 1, 1992.

Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Adam P. and Bessie P. (Brenner) Hafer.

She was a 1936 graduate of Muhlenberg High School.

She worked in the Saylor Weaver Pharmacy and then was a designer for Ferd Heck Florist until her retirement in 1975.

She was a member of the Reading Moravian Church, where she was a church elder for over 12 years and taught Sunday school for over 30 years. She was also the past president of Kings Daughters and Sons, a teacher in the Women's Fellowship Group.

Skip was also very active in Girl Scouts, serving as the service unit director of Great Valley Girls Scout Council, Allentown. She was a member of the Berks County Historical Society and a charter member of the Berks County Horticultural Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Melissa J., wife of Thomas O. Schaeffer, with whom Violet resided in Sinking Spring. Also surviving are two sisters: Liv, wife of Kenneth Reisinger, Birdsboro and Shirley, widow of Donald Oberly, Robesonia. There are two grandsons: Matthew, husband of Stefanie Schaeffer, Sinking Spring and Michael, husband of Mary Beth Schaeffer, Madison Heights, VA and two great-grandchildren: Gabriel Schaeffer and Chase Schaeffer.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Marsha Nan Hoffman in 1954. She was also predeceased by her seven siblings: Jeanne, Ann Lou, Adam, Mary, Pearl, Betty and Verne.

A Memorial Service will be Monday, June 6, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the Reading Moravian Church, 1116 Perry St., Reading, PA 19604. Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Forest Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Reading Moravian Church at the above address. Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., Laureldale, is in charge of arrangements.
