Vincent H. Kahler, 91, passed away on Tuesday, December 16th, 2014 in the Health Care Center of Phoebe Berks Village Wernersville, where he had been a patient since November.
Vincent was the husband of the late Margaret A. (Diehl) Kahler, who died on December 16th, 2010. Born in Lancaster, PA., he was the son of the late Cleon and Miriam (Hess) Kahler.
He was a graduate of East Hempfield High School, the Charles Morris Price Business College Philadelphia and Lancaster Business College. Vince had over forty-eight years in the retail and merchandising business, primarily in men's clothing and furnishings. He started his career in large department stores and specialty shops holding a number of sales and buyer positions with these companies. In 1963 he bought Vicary's Mens Shop in West Reading and developed it into one of the most exclusive men's clothing and furnishing stores in Berks County. After 32 years, Vince closed the store in 1995 in preparation for retirement.
Vince was very involved in the community and was an avid volunteer within many local organizations. He had been a SCORE counselor since 1996 and had been very active in the management and direction of the local SCORE chapters, having served as Vice Chairman of the Reading Chapter and Assistant Director of the Eastern Pennsylvania SCORE District. He was a past president of the West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club, past member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Broadway Theatre League, past president of the Wyomissing Institute of Arts and a board member of the Office of the Aging.
He was an Army veteran of World War II serving with the "Golden Acorn" 345th Infantry Regiment 87th Infantry Division.
Vince attended Mass at the Jesuit Center, Wernersville.
He is survived by a son, Dennis Kahler, husband of Cynthia (Pitcherello), Anthem, AZ and a daughter Maureen (Kahler), wife of Eric Biassey, West Lawn. There are four grandsons, Ryan Kahler of Dublin, CA; Christopher Kahler husband of Janelle Kahler, Charlotte, North Carolina, Nicholas Kahler, Anthem, AZ and Maxwell Biassey husband of Mary Ingram-Biassey, Shillington. Two great-grandsons, Sean Kahler and Chance Biassey. A sister, Dorothy Landvater, West Caldwell, New Jersey. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Kahler, Lancaster, PA.
A visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
