Troy A. Burkert

Troy A. Burkert, Sr., 93, of West Reading, passed away the afternoon of Thursday, August 26, 2021, in the care of ManorCare Sinking Spring. He was the widower of Jarnell Burkert, who passed away in 2012.

Born in Reading to the late Ammon Burkert and Mary Burkert Trader, Troy graduated from Reading High School '45. He worked throughout Pennsylvania managing textile factories. Locally he managed Kelray Knitting Mills (where he met Jarnell) and the Publix Shirt Co. of Myerstown.

Troy was an avid golfer for as long as he was able to swing his clubs—he played well into his 70's. He was sports fan, especially of the Eagles and the Phillies. A supportive father, Troy was always active with his son Alan's participation in the Special Olympics. He enjoyed servicing as a basketball referee. Troy was proud to be a member of the Free Masons Lodge No. 62 of Reading.

Troy is survived by his children: Judson T. Burkert; Troy Burkert, Jr. (Laura); and Alan T. Burkert; his six grandchildren; and one great grandchild. In addition to his wife, Jarnell, Troy was predeceased by his previous wife, Joyce, by his daughter Lynne Burkert Schappell, and by his son, L. Oliver Frey.
