Thomas B. Work, 88, formerly of Hamburg, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at The Highlands at Wyomissing, after an illness of several years. He was the husband of Katharine A. (Burkey) Work, whom he married on June 14, 1947. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Robert I. Work, of Hamburg, and C. Thomas Work, of Wyomissing; three grandchildren, Valerie L. Work, Jonathan T. Work and Melissa R. Work; and a great-grandson, Maxwell Thomas Work. Born in Charlotte, Tennessee on August 4, 1922, he was one of the seven children of Amanda Wilkins Work and Robert Payne Work, and survived all of his siblings. Following graduation from Dickson High School, Dickson, Tennessee in 1940, Tom served in the U.S. Army Infantry for nearly six years, primarily in the South Pacific, and earned both the rank of First Lieutenant and the Bronze Star for heroic achievement. After World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force for three years. Tom was employed by the Hamburg Knitting Mill for 35 years and retired as the plant manager in 1984. He was an avid Rotarian and a former president of the Hamburg Rotary. Tom was a member of First United Church of Christ in Hamburg and a church deacon for three years. His other volunteer service included membership on the board of St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg, and participation on crews of the Hamburg Ambulance. Services will be held on Thursday, August 19 at 11:00AM from the Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home Inc. Hamburg. There will be a one-hour visitation before the service. Rev.
