Thomas Richards Johns III, of Leesport, passed away on February 4, 2026 at Berkshire Commons. Born in Punxsutawney, he was the son of Spurgeon S. and Gladys (McFeaters) Johns. Tom was the loving husband of Antje (Wolf) Johns with whom he shared 64 wonderful years of love and partnership until her passing in April 2025.
Tom was a graduate of Westmont High School in Johnstown, PA. His lifelong love of history later inspired him to pursue a degree in education at Ohio Wesleyan University. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he continued his studies at Penn State University, where he obtained his master’s degree in education. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country with honor. Tom devoted his career to educating and inspiring students at Lewistown Area High School, where he taught until his retirement in 1993.
A true history buff, Tom especially enjoyed learning about and reading U.S. history and World War II. He was actively involved in the Republican Party in Lewistown and amassed an extensive collection of books on political figures. An avid traveler, Tom took many trips to Central Europe and made sure his grandchildren accompanied him so they could share in those experiences. He never missed completing the daily New York Times crossword. In his younger years, Tom also coached basketball and track and field.
Tom is survived by his sons, Thomas R. Johns IV (Carla), of Chalfont, PA, and Morgan E. Johns (Susan), of Leesport. He was a proud grandfather to Tom, Matt, Margaret Clay (Dane), Kylie Madore (Ryan), Anna Weber (Aaron), Emily, Jack, Lucy, Evan, Lillian Hoff (Nick),Reese, Mary, and William Johns. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Kadyn, Emma, Maise, Sawyer, Julia, Lucas, James, and Lawrence.
He was predeceased by his brother, Spurgeon S. Johns and his sister, Lucille Drew.
