Thelma E. Meck

Thelma E. Meck, 94, formerly of Hummingbird Hill Condos, Reading, died June 2, 2012 in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center. She last resided at Country Meadows of Wyomissing.

Born May 29, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Bessie S. (Moyer) Englehart.

She was predeceased by her husband Lester V. Meck who died March 7, 2008. They had been married for 67 years.

Thelma was the first in her family to graduate from the former Shillington High School. She worked at the former W.T. Grant store in downtown Reading and the former Feel-Fine Clothes. Lester and Thelma then opened "Barbette Fashions", a womens' clothes store in West Reading on Penn Avenue before she and Lester became co-managers of Hummingbird Hill Condos.

A member of St. James Church in West Reading, she enjoyed her monthly meetings of her Christian Fellowship group.

She was a strong and tireless advocate for her daughter Beverly when she became deaf at five years of age. With her and Lester's guidance, Beverly was able to go on to college. She loved gardening and continued her love of planting new flowers in the spring time at Hummingbird Hill.

She cherished her roles as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving is her daughter, Beverly A., wife of Raymond M. Groff of Exeter Township.

In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren, Peter A., husband of Meredith F. Groff of West Reading and Christopher T., husband of Amy B. Groff of Downingtown. She was also a loving great grandmother to Bryanna, Rebekah and Graham.

Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Thelma was predeceased by her four siblings, Mildred Raybuck, Gerald Englehart, Eleanor Lewis and Leroy Englehart.

The family would like to thank The Reading Hospital and Medical Center and Heartland Hospice staff for the loving care shown to Thelma during her last days.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter Township.
