Thaddeus Palka

Thaddeus (Ted) "Kingy" Palka, 89, formerly of West Wyomissing, died December 2, 2013, in Mifflin Center.

He was the husband of Arlean V. (Shutt) Palka; they were married on April 12, 1947.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Kolowrocki) Palka.

Ted worked for Acme Markets as a meat cutter throughout Berks County for 32 years last working at the Berkshire store as a manager, retiring in 1986.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII.

Ted was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.

He was a life member of: Polish Falcons, Reading and West Wyomissing Fire Company, he was also a member of Reber-Moore Veterans Association, Shillington.

Ted was extremely active in the Owls Sports Club, serving on the executive board, was a life member and spent countless hours running the concession stand. In 1998 the West Lawn Owls American Legion Baseball Field was dedicated to him and renamed Ted Palka Park. Ted was honored by the Apple Dumpling Festival Committee for his dedication to the festival, where he, for many years, headed the Owls food concessions. In 1998 he was also inducted into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Pamela D., wife of James Kahn, Lake Ariel, PA; one brother, Edmund, husband of Mary, Shillington and his daughter-in-law, Dora Palka, Union, SC. Three grandchildren, Stephanie Kahn, fiancee of Randy Ector; Stephen Kahn and Brian Kahn; two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren also survive him.

He was predeceased by two sons, Thaddeus E. Palka in 2012 and Lawrence A. Palka in 1971; and eight siblings, Matthew, Eugene, Edward, Chester, Louise Futrick, Helen Kosak, Loretta Palka and Irene Palka.

Services will be Saturday at 12 noon in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 to 12 noon in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Sacred Heart Memorial Fund, P.O.
