Stuart S. Shaner

Stuart S. "Pat" Shaner, winner of the 1934 river swim, died April 28 at 12:20 p.m. in his residence in Spring Township.

Shaner, 96, was the husband of Ethel M. (Bright) Shaner.

He was the county swimming champion from 1933 and 1935.

Shaner was a member of the Berks County Parks & Recreation Board from 1984 to 2004 and served as chairman from 1992 to 1994 and 1996 to 1998. He served as treasurer in 1998.

Born in Ephrata, he was a son of the late Arthur and Annie (McGill) Shaner.

Shaner was employed for many years as a clerk in the currency and coin department of Mellow Bank, Philadelphia, until his retirement.

He was a 1927 graduate of West Reading High School.

Shaner was a member of St. John's Reformed Church, Sinking Spring.

He became a life member of the Reading-Berks Basketball Old-Timers Association in 1985.

His wife is his only survivor.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading.Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m Tuesday at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc. Contributions may be made to Berks Basketball Oldtimers C/O Mike Schorn 1613 Palm Street Reading, PA 19604; St. John's Reformed Church 601 Penn Ave. Sinking Spring, PA 19608; or Berks Visiting Nurses 1170 Berkshire Blvd. Wyomissing, PA 19610. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery, Tuckerton.
