Sophie M. Matthews

Sophie M. Matthews, 92, formerly of West Reading, passed away peacefully September 24, 2011, surrounded by her loving family in their Wyomissing residence.

Her husband, David L. Matthews, Sr., died July 25, 2006.

Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late George and Helen (Kollar) Kalina.

She was a graduate of St. Peter's High School.

Sophie was the quintessential homemaker, taking great pride in her home and her family. After her children were grown she went to work for R.M. Palmer Candy Co., retiring in the early 1980's.

She was a member of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Reading.

Sophie enjoyed bird watching, gardening and admiring her dogwood trees; oh, and she loved to shop! She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she will be dearly missed.

Sophie is survived by her son, David L., Jr., widower of Teresa Matthews, Mesa, AZ and her daughters: Shelia A. Matthews, Chester County and Marnie M., wife of John H. Funk, with whom she resided. Also surviving is her sister, Dorothy Hagan, Wyomissing. Three grandchildren: Ryan Matthews, AZ; Drew Matthews, AZ; Sam Funk, Wyomissing and several nieces and nephews survive her. She was predeceased by her sisters, Anna C. Bosavage, Margaret Frees and her brother Johnny Kalina.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart R.C. Church. A viewing will be held Wednesday 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in Edward J.
