Sophia Maria Katz

Sophia (Sophie) Maria Katz passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025. Sophie was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on January 14, 1951, to Krisoula and James Nicholas Liopiros. She graduated from Reading High School in 1969 and remained a Reading resident her entire life.

After high school, Sophie began a 40-year career in banking, rising up through the ranks from a dollar an hour employee at what was originally American Bank and Trust Co. of Pennsylvania, which became Meridian and later merged with CoreStates, First Union, Wachovia and finally Wells Fargo. She was a Vice President at the time of her retirement. Sophie specialized in ERISA law and employee retirement plans, managing retirement accounts and providing excellent advice to top companies and organizations, while ensuring the smooth transition of their accounts through the many changes of systems and ownership of her bank.

Sophie was an intrepid traveler. She sailed the Caribbean Seas with her brother Kostas and nephew Stefan, and traveled with Kostas, her sister-in-law Barbara and niece Alex to numerous Greek islands and Athens, Istanbul, Ephesus, Paris, Amsterdam, Venice and Costa Rica. She particularly delighted in taking her grandchildren and great grandchildren on trips to Disney in Florida, where her favorite ride was the "Rock 'N Rollercoaster."

She is survived by her son Jere Katz, her cherished grandchildren Jessica Quirin, Alyssa and Aidan Katz, together with Jessica's husband Nick, her great grandchildren Willow and Silas Quirin and Makena Beasley, her beloved brother Kostas James Liopiros, his wife, Barbara Sara Esbin, her niece, Alexandra (Alex) Sophia Liopiros, her beloved nephew Stefan Liopiros, his wife Wendy Liopiros and daughters Zoie and Alena, her sister Vasiliki (Bess) Watts and her nephew, Donald Lewis.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2024 at Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. Family and friends will be received at 9:30am with a time of sharing beginning at 10:30am. The burial service at Charles Evans Cemetery will be closed to family only.
