Sidney A. Burkot

Sidney A. Burkot, Sr., 79, of West Lawn, died on April 28, 2008, in Reading Hospital.

He was the husband of Theresa "Tess" (Hegedus) Burkot.

Born in Easton, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Karam) Burkot.

Sidney was a member of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, Sinking Spring.

He was a 1946 graduate of Easton Catholic High School, and also graduated from Lafayette College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Sidney was a department chief for Western Electric, retiring from Lucent Technologies in 1989.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Sidney was a PIAA Swimming Official for over 30 years and has been involved in swimming in Berks County for 48 years. He was a past president for Wilshire and Lincoln Park Pools. Sidney umpired and coached baseball. He was an avid tennis player, captained his Easton Catholic High School '46 basketball team which won the Class C State Championship, and also played American Legion baseball.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Cynthia M., wife of Lynn E. Schaeffer, Bernville; a son, Sidney A., Jr., husband of Mary Jo Burkot, Mt. Airy, MD; and a daughter, Bridget T. Burkot, Mechanicsville, VA.

He is survived by a sister, Geraldine Boulous, Easton. There are also eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two step-great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews also survive him.

Friends may call Wednesday 6:00-9:00 p.m. and Thursday 9:00-9:45 a.m. at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ignatius R.C. Church, 2810 St. Alban's Drive, Sinking Spring. Entombment will follow at Gethsemane Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, 25 Stevens Avenue, West Lawn, PA 19609. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhome.com.
