Sebastian Vespico, 95, of Wyomissing Hills, passed away peacefully in the early hours of December 31, 2010 at the Homestead Village Health Center, Lancaster.
He was born in Reading, PA, the second of four children of the late Vincent and Nunziata (Vazzano) Vespico.
He is survived by his wife, Helen M. (Zajac)Vespico, with whom he enjoyed more than 76 years of marriage and his sister, Angela (Vespico) Mollica of Bethlehem, PA.
In addition to his wife and sister, he is survived by two sons, Robert D. Vespico, Warrenton, Va. widower of the late Arlene (Masciotti) Vespico and John S. Vespico, Robesonia, husband of Dr. Margaret Bazarnic, and a daughter, Kathleen (Vespico) Gray, Lancaster, widow of CWO George A. Gray. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Robert D. Vespico , Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Lee A. Vespico, Santee, CA , Amy (Vespico) Buckley, Manassas, VA, Anthony S. Vespico, Warrenton, Va., Lisa (Vespico) Thenga, Sinking Springs, John S. Vespico, Jr., Hamburg, and Alexandra Vespico, Robesonia. He is also survived by seven great grand children, one great, great grandson, several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary (Vespico) Schellhammer, and a brother, Vincent Vespico.
He was a barber by profession and practiced his profession in Reading, PA for over 70 years, including serving as proprietor and manager of the Abraham Lincoln Hotel Barber Shop for over 35 years and prior to that as proprietor and manager of the Berkshire Hotel Barber Shop. He was an ardent supporter of Downtown Reading, Pa and the Reading business community. He was a long time member of St. Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church and before that of Sacred Heart Church. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and horseback riding, especially trail riding in the Berks County area and on the Appalachian Trail and was a long time quarter horse owner and rider. He enjoyed vacations with his family and extended family in Stone Harbor and Avalon N.J. and as he neared retirement enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the Eastern and Southern United States and Europe.
Sebastian's family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the Apostle Health Center of Homestead Village for the kind and respectful care that they gave Sebastian during his last year and one half and to Hospice of Lancaster County which provided comfort and support during his final days.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church, 2810 St. Albans Dr., Whitfield, PA 19609. A viewing will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church at the above address.
