Scott A. Wertz

Scott Alan Wertz, 40, of Spring Township and a Criminal Investigator for the Reading Police Department was pronounced dead at 2:30am in the Emergency Room at the Reading Hospital after being shot in the line of duty at 8th & Walnut, Reading.

He was married June 3, 1995 to Tricia Lynn (Schappell) Wertz.

Born in Reading, he was a son of Edward R. Wertz, Jr. of Reading and the late Virginia C. (Herbst) Wertz.

He was a 1984 graduate of Wilson High School and a 1994 graduate of the Reading Police Academy.

Scott was employed from 1990-1996 as a corrections officer at the Berks County Prison. He was also a part-time police officer for the Borough of Sinking Spring and South Heidelberg Township from 1994-1996.

He was employed nine years for the Reading Police Department, last working as a criminal investigator.

Scott is also survived by two sons, Jared S. and Joshua A., both at home.

Other survivors include a brother, Chad E. Wertz of Hamburg and a sister, Michele L. Wertz of Muhlenberg Township.

Services will be Wednesday at 12 noon in The Sovereign Center, 700 Penn Street, Reading. Viewings will be Tuesday evening 5:00 - 9:00 pm in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading and Wednesday morning 9:00 am until time of service in The Sovereign Center. Burial will be in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading.
