Sara C. Matthews

Sara C. Matthews, 92, of Wyomissing., died in the care of her loving family and devoted caregivers on November 16, 2007 in her Wyomissing residence.

She was married to Dr. George R. Matthews for 65 years who died October 8, 2005.

Born in Leesport, she was the daughter of the late Harry F. and Lily (Keim) Kaufman.

She graduated from Ontelaunee High School and Kutztown University and then taught elementary school for Maidencreek School and later Ontelaunee School before retiring in 1940 upon her marriage.

She served on the Kutztown University Board of Trustees from 1964-1972. On leaving the Board, she became a founding member of Kutztown University Foundation. She worked for the Foundation until 1997. Active in many civic organizations, she devoted particular time to the Reading Hospital Staff Wives Association and the Berks County Medical Society Alliance.

She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church and taught in its Sunday School for many years. She remained active in its Mary Circle to the last week of her life. Sara will be best remembered for her gracious manner, warm smile, and loving spirit.

She is survived by her son, Michael L. husband of Jean Matthews, Lafayette Hill; and her two daughters, Mary M. wife of Edward Cloues, Lower Gwynedd, and Sara wife of Dr. Raymond Fabius, Newtown Square.

Other survivors include six grandchildren, Carrie Matthews, Matthew Cloues, Betsy Cloues, Michael Fabius, Patrick Matthews, and Daniel Fabius; and one great grandchild Andrew Dobrowolski.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, December 1, at 1 p.m. in Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Blvd., Wyomissing, PA 19610. Burial will be private in Leesport Cemetery.
