S. Leroy Maiorana, M.D.

S. LeRoy Maiorana, M.D., 86, of Wyomissing, passed away Monday, September 14, 2015. Born in Reading on August 5, 1929, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Frances (Fuoti) Maiorana. He was the husband of Germaine Lord Maiorana. He and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 25, 2015.

Dr. Maiorana graduated from Reading High School as Salutatorian in 1946 at the age of 16. He attended Cornell University from 1946-49, having been awarded Telluride Association Preferment, 1946-47 and a member of the Dean's List in 1948. After three years at Cornell, he was accepted at the Temple University Medical School, where he graduated Cum Laude, in 1953. Dr. Maiorana served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953–56 as a Flight Surgeon. He served a Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1956-59 at the Temple University Medical Center. He was a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Maiorana was a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Berks County Medical Societies, having served as President of the Berks County Medical Society from 1989-90, Chairman of the Berks County Medical Society Executive Council from 1992-94, member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society House of Delegates for 12 years and Editor of the Berks County Medical Society Medical Record from 1996-99. He was in the private practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology for 36 years, having retired in 1995. He also worked as a part-time medical consultant for the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation for over 50 years.

Dr. Maiorana was a life-long member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Reading, serving as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and member of the Church Choir and Holy Name Society. In 2015, he celebrated 50-years of membership in the Serra Club of Reading, whose members work to promote and foster religious vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Dr. Maiorana served as President of the Serra Club of Reading from 1970-71, 1996-97 and 2008-09 and Governor of District 80-1 of Serra International from 1999-2000. He served as the President of the Board of Mary's Shelter of Reading from 1997-2006.

Dr. Maiorana served as President of the American Cancer Society of Berks County for 2 years, member of the Executive Board for 15 years and a Pennsylvania Delegate for 3 years. He served on the Board of the John Paul II Center for Special Learning from 1997-2005.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Francesca A., wife of Lawrence P. Bansbach, Ardmore, Montgomery County; Lisa M., Hummelstown; and Nicholas G., husband of Suzanne, Macon, Georgia. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Julia Marian, Maria Francesca and Nicholas Lee of Macon, Georgia; and Philip Won Hyo Kim Bansbach of Montgomery County. He was predeceased by his sister, Rosalie Maiorana Hilliard.

He was an extraordinary man who was devoted to God, his family and helping others. He loved life- delivering some 5000 babies. His passions included his Italian heritage, growing roses, music, cars and trains.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 18, 2015, at 10 a.m. in Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 237 Franklin Street, Reading, PA 19602. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Friday from 9 – 10 a.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church or the Serra Club of Reading, www.readingserraclub.org.
