Ruth Elizabeth (Murphy) Jameson passed away in Reading Hospital on December 14, 2012 at age 85. She was born to Lawrence and Ruth Murphy (Culliton) on October 5, 1927 in Hollis, Queens, New York and was the loving wife of Richard F. Jameson, Sr. for 59 years, until his death in 2009. Together, they raised a family of 6 children, 19 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren in a marital journey that covered 7 states. They resided in the Reading area since 1988.
Ruth graduated from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing, (Jamaica, Queens, NY) in 1948 and was a registered nurse for over 50 years. She had a wonderful bedside manner and was admired for her dedication to the sick. She rose to the position of head nurse and later earned her E.M.T. and Paramedic 3 license as an ambulance nurse for Latrobe (PA) Area Hospital. In Reading, she was employed at Wyomissing Nursing and Rehabilitation and she culminated her career as a volunteer school nurse at Holy Name High School School.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist de LaSalle Roman Catholic Church, Shillington, where she was an extraordinary minister of the eucharist to the homebound. She adored all children and showered them with affection.
Born to a family with a rich musical tradition, Ruth played the piano and bass fiddle and loved to sing. She was an avid card player, especially contract rummy and bridge. She loved the beach. She regularly baked cakes and pies and enjoyed cooking. She loved watching birds visit her many, many bird feeders. She collected ceramic birds, Native American art, and bells. Ruth loved sports. She began her 'sports mom' career in 1960 in Grand Blanc, Michigan when she coached her 2 older sons' little league baseball team (the 1st mom to coach a baseball team in anyone's memory). For more than 50 years she cheered her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren through youth, school, and college sports and no one cheered louder or prouder.
