Russell Victor Helms (Sonny), 80, of Reading passed away peacefully on Friday, March 21, 2025 at West Reading Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Reading on November 22,1944, a son of the late Theresa (Rapaladics) and G. Russell Helms. Russell was predeceased by his brother, Alan L. Helms and he was the stepbrother of Donald L. Helms, the founder of Fleetwood Industries.

Russell graduated from Reading High school in 1962 and earned a B.A. in Psychology from Albright College.

In 1990, Russell received a certification of Professional Studies in Addiction from Alvernia University. He worked at the Reading Eagle as a linotype operator and computer programmer from 1968 to 1974. He also worked at R.M. Palmer Company for 29 years.

Russell was very proud of his volunteer work. For 25 years, he was a leader of a Dual Diagnosis group, which helped people overcome addictions and manage mental illnesses. He loved Australia and Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and London, England. He was extremely smart, only missing being inducted into Mensa by a percentage point.

Services for Russell will be private.
