Russell W. Allen, 92, of Spring Township, died Monday, March 27, 2017, in Reading Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was the husband of Jessie M. (Selen) Allen. They were married 57 years.
Born December 25, 1924, in Holcomb, NY, he was a son of the late Morton C. and Edna Kesby Allen.
An Army veteran of World War II, Russell served in the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, participating in the campaign of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands and participating in the invasion of Luzon in the Philippine Islands where he was wounded during the siege of Manila. For heroic action in the Philippine campaign he was awarded the Bronze Star, also the Purple Heart and the Philippines Liberation Medal.
He was a member of West Lawn United Methodist Church.
Russell was employed for 40 years as Personal Management Specialist in the U.S. Federal Government serving most recently in the Department of Defense in Reading, PA, retiring in 1989.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are his daughter, Jenny L., wife of Caleb A. Semsel of Cumru Township; his son, Matthew R. Allen, husband of Denys, Cumru Township and grandchildren, Eden and Gabriel Semsel and Cassandra and Gabrielle Allen. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Morton D. Allen.
Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Services will be private. A memorial will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Russell's name to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, 58 Kennel Rd., Birdsboro, PA 19508. Edward J.
