Roy Robert Weiland, 88, of Dover, passed away Friday, January 28, 2011, at York Hospital where he had been a patient for two days.

Born in Beavertown, PA on October 17, 1922, he was the beloved husband of Dorothy (Hetrick) Weiland of Dover and the late Roy D. and Freda K. (Keiser) Weiland.

Roy proudly served in the US Army with the Engineering Corp in the South Pacific area during WWII. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School class of 1940, and a 1947 graduate of Penn State University, where he received his degree in Journalism.

Before his retirement in 1987, he had been employed by McCrory's Variety Stores for 44 years, serving as manager, district manager, and regional manager in many areas of the country.

He was a member of American Legion Post #791 and Salem Lutheran Church, Dover.

Roy was a Dallas Cowboys fan, liked to watch NASCAR, listened to talk radio, and had a delightful sense of humor. He was proud to be an American and loved his family dearly and was dearly loved by them. Roy was always a considerate, kind, and gentle Christian with neighbors, friends, and family. He was highly respected by all who knew him and will be truly missed.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by a son, R. Robert Weiland II and his wife Cindy of York, and a daughter, Jaclyn L. Schertle and her husband Herman of Houston, TX; four grandchildren: Jillian Wagner and her husband Daniel of Cypress, TX, Alyssa F. Schertle of Houston, TX, Zachary R. Weiland and his wife Monica of Mt. Wolf, PA, and Kyle R. Weiland and his wife Amber of Dover; and one great-granddaughter, Hailey N. Weiland of Dover.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Christ Lutheran Church, Oley, with Rev. Robert R. Mitchell officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Oley Union Cemetery, Spangsville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10 to 11 am at the church.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Salem Lutheran Church, 2001 George St., Dover, PA, 17315 with Rev. Edgar Reed officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 325 Covered Bridge Rd., Oley, PA 19547 or to Salem Lutheran Church at the above address.
