Ronald L. Spickler

Ronald L. Spickler, 83 of Wyomissing, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 13 in The Reading Hospital after a brief illness. Born August 27, 1934 in Reading, he was a son of the late Lester and Catherine (Botzum) Spickler.

A 1952 graduate of Reading High School, Ron received his BA in Teaching at Kutztown University in 1956. Upon graduation, he entered the US Army, where he was predominantly stationed in Alaska.

Upon discharge from the Army, Ron returned to Reading and was a career educator, teaching first at Southern Junior High School for seven years, before returning to his alma mater to teach Social Studies at Reading High School for 26 years, retiring in 1993.

At Reading High, Ron served as Social Studies Department Head, and was a Sponsor of the Key Club, and permanent Head Sponsor for many senior classes. Ron simply loved teaching, and was a great influence on the thousands of students who were fortunate enough to be taught by him.

After living in Reading nearly all of his life, Ron moved to the Highlands at Wyomissing, where he thrived the past 12 years. He was on the Residents Council and Marketing Committee for the Highlands, and truly enjoyed his years there, making many new friends. Ron was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, West Reading, and was a Eucharistic Minister at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

Although he had many friends, Ron enjoyed two very special friendships in his life: lifelong classmate, friend and fellow Reading High Teacher Tom Fox, and later in life, Shirley Jackson at the Highlands. He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins, and their extended families. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Mary Witman, and a brother J. Robert Spickler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Ron at 10:00am on Friday, June 22 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, West Reading. Friends may call at the Church one hour prior to Mass, from 9:00-10:00am. Burial will follow Mass at Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron's honor may be made to the Endowment Fund of the Highlands at Wyomissing, 2000 Cambridge Avenue, Wyomissing, PA 19610, to the Sacred Heart Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 6217, Wyomissing, PA 19610, or to the charity of your choice.
