Roman M. Chimenko, 95, formerly of West Wyomissing, died August 4, 2009 in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
His wife, Olena (Witoska) Chimenko died November 3, 1990.
Born in Krivoy Rog, Ukraine he immigrated to the United States and was a machinist for over 30 years. He was first employed by American Chain and Cable and later for Reading Techmatic, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of West Lawn United Methodist Church.
Roman followed current events, was an avid soccer fan, loved gardening and splitting wood by hand.
He was passionate about music, performing as an accordionist for a traveling Cossack troop in post-war Europe, later he was the leader of the HyDukes Band and also sang in his church choir.
Roman survived the Communist Revolution, Fascism and Hitler, World War II and a trek from Poland through Germany, where he pulled a wagon for 500 miles to get to the West. He never forgot his roots, helping relatives in the Ukraine, throughout his life.
He is survived by his two sons, Edward R., husband of Karen M. (Barth), Reinholds and George, husband of Crispina (Tann), Robesonia; three grandchildren, Joseph, Christian and Katherine, wife of Dennis Petricoin; and a great-grandson, Ian.
Roman was predeceased by a grandson, Peter.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in West Lawn U. M. Church. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the church. Edward J.
