Roger W. Allers, 78, passed away May 21, 2026, in his Wyomissing residence.,
He was the husband of Linda Margaret Allers.
Born in Baltimore, MD., he was the son of the late Norman Carroll and Laura Margaret (Pfeifer) Allers.
He was a graduate of Suitland High School in 1966 and Prince George’s C.C. in 1977 where he earned a degree in A.A. Mechanical Technology.
Roger served our nation proudly and valiantly in the US Navy; enlisted in the USN on January 3, 1968. Completed basic Propulsion Engineering School and Mechanics Mate “A” School after basic training. Assigned to the USS New Orleans (LPH 11) Procom Crew at Norfolk, VA. Boarded the UTZ New Orleans (LPH-11) in the Philadelphia shipyard commissioned on November 16, 1968. The ship was homeported in San Diego, CA and then deployed to Vietnam for two tours serving as offshore support for the Marines. On February 19, 1971, his unit recovered the Apollo 14 space capsule. Roger attained the status of E-T, MMZ before leaving his active-duty status on November 8, 1971. Over the next 8 years he began working in the private sector as a building maintenance supervisor assigning personnel to watch stations on firewall, engine room, import duty sections and maintained engine room preventive maintenance systems, all while attending classes at Prince George's Community College. He later began working for the Bureau of Engraving and the Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. Roger joined the National Attn. of Power Engineers D.C. #1 Chapter and attended Johnson Controls Training Institute which offered comprehensive Building Aviation HVAC training. This training opened the opportunity for his career at The Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., where he remained until retirement. He was a member of the Alexandria, VA Chapter of VVA &VFW Post 609 up until he moved to Pennsylvania in August, 2013. After moving to Reading, PA he joined the VVA Chapter 131 and the Navy Club USA Ship 258 until he resigned his position as Ships Writer in 2025. Roger Enjoyed bicycling, traveling, hiking, swimming, and bowling at Berks Lanes.
In addition to his wife Linda, he is survived by his brother, Daniel, husband of Christina Allers; his sister, Doris Allers; his step-brother, Bernard Helms; his step-sister, Jan LaDuke; his step-daughter Heather, wife of Dwayne Hartkopf; his step-nephew James LaDuke; his step-niece, Janeigh Roberts; and his step-grandson, Ashton Hartkopf.
He was predeceased by his brother, Norman (Cass) Carroll Allers, Jr.
Services will be Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Burial will be private. Friends may call Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Roger’s memory to a charity of your choice.
