Rodney L. McGrath, 87, passed away in Wyomissing with his loving daughter by his side on Saturday, December 25, 2021.
Born in West Reading, he was the son of the late Leroy McGrath and Dorothy McGrath (Homan).
He graduated from West Reading High School in 1952 where he was involved in many sports including basketball, football, track, and baseball, as well as being a member of the band and orchestra. Rodney also spoke fluent French and loved to travel. He attended Lehigh University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
In 1957, Rodney married Marilyn J. Wertz to whom he was married until her passing in 2012. He was remarried to Ruth Mathews in 2014, until she passed in 2016. He was predeceased by his son Rodney, Jr in 2020.
Rodney worked as a chemical engineer in telecommunications for Western Electric (AT&T) until 1994 when he retired and became a partner at East West Therapeutic Massage and Massage School in Wyomissing with his wife Marilyn and son Rod Jr. Rodney practiced and taught Massage, Chinese Medicine, Zen Shiatsu, T'ai Chi/Qigone, and Reflexology.
In his free time, Rodney enjoyed spending time outdoors biking, hiking, camping, and other activities. He also volunteered as a tutor for the Literacy Council of Reading-Berks and was the former president of the Flying Dutchman Ski Club, where he received the Bob Budd memorial award for exemplary service in 1987. Rodney also had a love for music, playing the trombone, piano, banjo, guitar, drumming, and other instruments.
Rodney is survived by his daughter, Susan McGrath and her son Harry Naumann. He is also survived by his two nieces Andrea McCullough and Lori Donahue, California and his grandson Jackson Brubaker, Montana. He is also survived by Elizabeth, wife of Paul Lavicka, Downingtown.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 3, 2022 , at 11 a.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be expressed at www.kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
