Robert P. Springer, 74, of Sinking Spring, PA passed away on March 19 at Phoebe-Berks Village. He was born in Canonsburg, PA, the son of the late Elizabeth (Bowers) and Joseph Clark Springer. He was the husband of Barbara (Schaeffer) Springer. They would have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on April 5.
He is also survived by his two children: Jed Springer, Sterling, VA, and Kate, wife of Steven Keifer, Herndon, VA. There are five grandchildren, Maxwell and Madeline Springer, and Jack, Jane, and Olive Keifer. Bob is survived by a sister, Betty Jo Reinoehl, two nephews, and one niece. He is also survived by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ruth and J. Richard Schaeffer, as well as his brother-in-law, Jay Schaeffer and his companion, Ellen Hause.
Bob graduated from Governor Mifflin High School in 1959. He was class vice president and captain of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. He graduated from Millersville University in 1963 with a BS in Elementary Education. He was a pitcher on the varsity baseball team for four years. In 1970 he received his Master of Education Degree with a certification in Administration from Lehigh University. He taught sixth grade for seven years, first at the Farview School and then at the Shillington Elementary School, where he also served as head teacher. Bob continued his teaching career at Schuylkill Valley School District as a principal of the Ontelaunee and Centre Schools. He later served as principal of the Intermediate School Program as well as the Middle School. He was Assistant Superintendent for two years before returning to the classroom to complete his career teaching sixth grade math.
Bob was a longtime member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Shillington, the PSEA retirees, the Governor Mifflin Boys Soccer Council from 1987-1992, Beaverhead Hunting Lodge, Mohnton Fish and Game Association, and the Wednesday Men's Classic Bowling League. He was a lifelong hunter, trout fisherman, and Steelers fan. Since his retirement in 2000 he enjoyed playing golf twice a week with the Brothers of the Ball.
Of all the many things Bob enjoyed, family was the most important. He made many trips to Virginia to visit with his children and grandchildren and be a part of their activities.
Relatives and friends are invited to Bob's Celebration of Life Service to be held at Immanuel UCC, Shillington, PA on Wednesday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Dale Davis and Reverend Megan Huesgen officiating. The family will greet friends and guests after the service in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Bob's name to Immanuel UCC, 99 South Waverly Street, Shillington, PA. The Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., is charge of arrangements.
