Robert P. Miller

Robert P. Miller, 86, formerly of Muhlenberg Township, died June 24 at 4:30 a.m. in ManorCare Health Services Inc., West Reading, where he had resided since May 17, 2003.

His wife, Sophie (Straka) Miller, died Dec. 29.

Born in Port Clinton, Schuylkill County, he was a son of the late Robert and Margaret (Mengel) Miller.

Miller was employed by the Reading Company as an engineer from 1954 until his retirement from Conrail in 1982. He had also worked for 13 years as a locomotive fireman for the railroad. In addition, he worked from 1938 to 1941 as a knitter at Berkshire Knitting Mills, Wyomissing.

He was a graduate of St. Peter's High School, Reading.

Miller was a member of Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church, Hyde Park.

He was a life member of the United Transportation Union, Reading, where he served as vice president in 1960.

Miller was a past general chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive and Engineer Men, Lodge 562, Reading.

Surviving are two sons, Glenn R., Boulder, Colo., and Mark D., Richmond, Va.; and four daughters: Kathleen M. (Miller) Slegelmilch, North Chatham, Mass.; Lucille M. (Miller) Genslinger, Hyde Park; Elaine (MIller) Farag, Sinking Spring; and Roberta (Miller) Weiger, West Reading.

Other survivors include 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Resurrection at Gethsemane Cemetery, Laureldale. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., Laureldale, is in charge of arrangements.
