Robert S. Long, 89, devoted grandfather and loving neighbor, of Reading, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2021, while in the care of Fairlane Gardens Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was the widower of Louise B. Long, who passed away on April 8, 2003.
Born in Reading to the late Samuel J. and Minnie E. (Wagner) Long, Robert began his career at Tom Sturgis Pretzels as a young man. He worked his way through the ranks and retired as Plant Manager in 1993 after 45 years of service. Anyone who had the pleasure to work with him would remember a kind and giving man.
Robert was active in the music industry and enjoyed playing and singing in the Reading/Berks area for over 60 years. He sang and played guitar in Rock and Roll bands through the 60's and 70's; he then performed with a quartet that included his wife Louise on the piano for many years. Finally, for the past 18 years before the pandemic, Robert sang at retirement homes, nursing homes, and adult day care facilities throughout Berks County, and had several CDs produced with songs from various genres of music.
During his retirement Robert also enjoyed baking cakes and pies, sharing the products of his baking with many friends and family.
Embodying the virtue of charity, Robert loved to help others. After his retirement he volunteered to assist seniors and others in need.
Robert is survived by his granddaughter, Michelle Warunek, a nephew, Michael H. Schaeffer, husband of Sharon (Ort) Schaeffer, and niece Laurie E. (Schaeffer) Biehl wife of Jeffrey R. Biehl, and great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his great-grandson, Anthony, his son David Long, and his sister Ruth W. (Long) Schaeffer.
Committal services for Robert will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at 2:30 pm at Charles Evans Cemetery, 1119 Centre Ave, Reading, PA. Robert will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Louise. Family and close friends are invited to gather at the Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading beginning at 1:30 pm, and the procession to Charles Evans will depart at 2:15 pm.
