Robert Daniel Helm, 82 of Waynesboro, PA died early Tuesday morning,January 10th, following a short, brave fight against brain cancer. He was born September 21st, 1929 in Lancaster, PA to the late E. Willis and Myra (Eshleman) Helm. Bob began his career at the age of 10 selling candy bars from his grandfather's candy factory. His venture carried him through graduation from McCaskey High School in 1947 and Franklin & Marshall College in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 and spent 8 years in the reserves after his discharge. He worked for Ernest & Young from 1953-1959. Bob came to Waynesboro in 1959 and served as Secretary/Treasurer for Teledyne Landis Machine Company until his retirement in 1989. Bob married the late Gloria G. (Rohrbach) Helm in 1967 and they lived in Waynesboro until 1999. He had recently moved back to Waynesboro after 11 years in Mohnton. He was a current member of the Acacia Lodge 576 F&AM, the Elks Club, and the American Institute of CPAs and the Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs. Bob was Past Master of the Acacia Lodge and previously served on many local committees including the Board of Directors of the Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors for Capital Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Waynesboro Human Services, Bob's favorite pastimes were maintaining his lawn and gardens, playing Uno with Izzy & Riley, Bridge and, most of all, anything to do with Penn State Football. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Hila Jean Diller and his wife of 32 years. His illness was brief and hard fought, he had no pain and no complaints, he passed peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by his daughter, Lori Helm and her boyfriend Christopher Jackson of Waynesboro, PA and a large extended family of brother and sister in laws, nieces and nephews as well as many dear, close friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14th at 11:00 AM from the Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Inc. 40 S. 4th Street, Hamburg. A viewing will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Road, Waynesboro, PA. 17268.
