Robert A. Bickel

Mr. Bickel was born on April 15, 1928 and passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2010.

Mr. Bickel was last known to be living in Durham, North Carolina.

He graduated from high school in 1946. Mr. Bickel was awarded a football scholarship to attend Duke University from 1948-1952 where he graduated with a BA degree.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he attained the rank of Electricians Mate Third Class. Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Navy.

He is survived by his wife Anne.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. Officiating was Rev. Chris Teseniar from Braggtown Baptist Church. Burial was in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Robert A. "Bob" Bickel, 82, passed away August 29, 2010 in Durham, N.C. He was a 1946 graduate of Wyomissing H.S. and co-captained both the football and basketball teams. After graduation he served 2 years in the U.S. Navy. He then attended Duke University on a football scholarship and in his senior year was named MVP. Mr Bickel also earned All-America honors on the Duke lacrosse team in his junior and senior years. In 1952 , he was drafted by the New York Giants football team along with another running back out of USC named Frank Gifford. Mr. Bickel is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anne (Veazey) Bickel, his sons Robert and Greg, all of Durham and his brother Cary B.
