Rita H. Mieczkowski, 89, Mt. Penn, died January 20, 2007 in Reading Hospital where she was admitted earlier in the day.
Her husband John A. Mieczkowski died March 10, 1997.
Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Herman F. and Anna F. (Nuding) Miller, the former owners of Miller's Restaurant and Ice Cream.
She was a graduate of the former St. Paul's High School, Reading in 1933.
Rita was first employed as a secretary and stenographer for the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. From 1945 to 1946 she was a medical secretary for the former Valley Forge Army General Hospital, Valley Forge. She was also a secretary for the Veteran Affairs, Reading from 1946 to 1948. After raising her children, she worked at a variety of professions including the Berkshire Country Club, where she served as both a hostess and waitress.
She was a member of St. Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Penn. Rita was also a member of the Polish Falcons.
She is survived by six sons, John M., Oley, Joseph E., Fairfield, Gary A., Greely, CO, Alan J., and Michael P., both of Mt. Penn and David D., Laureldale. There is also one sister Josephine L. Iwanowski, Exeter Twp., seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one brother, John E. Miler and three sisters, Rosemarie Miller, Anna C. Wolszczenski and Cecilia A. Calabria.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Catharine's Chapel, Mt. Penn. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading.
