Richard L. "Dick" Young

Richard L. “Dick” Young, of Reading, passed away on January 26, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born on August 19, 1934, in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, Richard was the son of the late Edward E. and Betty Mae (Fasnacht) Young. He graduated from Coatesville High School in 1953 and went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force. During his military service, he also attended the U.S. Naval Academy and was stationed in Greenland.

Following his honorable discharge, Richard pursued higher education at Penn State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1970. He enjoyed a long and successful career as an engineer, working for Met-Ed and GPU before retiring from GAI-Tronics.

Richard was deeply devoted to his family and his community. He found great joy in coaching youth football when his sons played in the Midget/Mites league for the 18th Ward Eagles and cherished the friendships and memories formed during those years.

He was the loving husband of Patricia (Zuwiala) Young, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his three children: Richard S. Young, husband of Terry, of Aberdeen, NC; Pamela A. Skrocki, wife of Kevin, of West Lawn; and Gregory E. Young, husband of Maria, of Reading.

Richard’s greatest joy came when he became “Pop Pop.” He is survived by six grandchildren, Jeremy Barr, Frankie Young, Megan Reinert, Gregory Young, Tyler Young, and Helen Young; and five great-grandchildren: Mia Montalvo; Jordis and Declan Reinert; and Gavin and Rowan Barr.

Richard will be remembered for the deep love he had for his family, his sense of humor, creativity, and unwavering optimism. Above all, he instilled a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world in his children and grandchildren. They fondly remember growing up listening to the Beatles and Pink Floyd, summers swimming at Ken-Grill pool, drinking “Bug Juice” and “Grasshopper Spit,” being woken in the middle of the night to watch meteor showers and doing homework at Angelica Dam. Richard was the go-to resource for help with math or physics and proudly inspired a new generation of engineers in his family.

Richard will be dearly missed, but his legacy lives on through the memories, laughter, curiosity, and love he shared with all who knew him.
