Richard S. Schmeck

Richard S. Schmeck, 82, passed away Saturday, January, 27, 2018, in Wyomissing Rehabilitation Center.

He is survived by his wife Mary E. (Rathman) Schmeck, to whom he would have been married to for 60 years this June.

Born in Mohnton, he was the son of the late Irvin and Thelma A. (Unger) Schmeck.

He was a 1955 graduate of Reading High School, earned an Associates degree in Electrical Engineering from PSU- Allentown, in 1957, and also earned a BA in Business Administration from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, Iowa.

Richard was a U.S. Army 1st Sergeant veteran with a total of thirty years service both active and in the reserves. He retired from the Army in 1995.

He worked on the space program at G.E. from 1960 -1969, was an instrumentation technician at Firestone from 1970 - 1979, he then worked in Nuclear Field Services for G.E. from 1980 - 1989, and he also did consulting work for the New York Power Authority, White Plains, NY.

Richard loved to golf and travelling.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by four sons: Richard A., husband of Terri Schmeck, Harrisburg; Eric R. Schmeck, Bloomsburg; Byron K., husband of Robin Schmeck, Quakertown; and Lt. Colonel Derek I., husband of Amy Schmeck, Colorado Springs, CO. Ten grandchildren: Zachary and wife Melissa, Lauren, Joshua, Elisa, Ryan, Rich, Kayla, Sienna, Sinjin, and Sawyer, and a niece, Carol Caccesse also survive him.

He was predeceased by a step-brother, Irvin H. Schmeck.

A viewing will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.
