Richard Clayton Pomeroy passed away peacefully on November 24, 2013 at the Highlands, aged 96.
He was born March 14, 1917 the son of Fred and Julia Pomeroy, in Toledo, OH, and subsequently lived in Berwyn, IL and Quakertown, PA before coming to the Reading area. He was predeceased by his wife Angele.
While studying at the University of Toledo he became fascinated with radio, getting his Amateur Radio (or "Ham") License in 1938. This hobby soon blossomed, motivating him to study Electrical Engineering and complete and Master of Science degree at the University of Michigan. He never lost interest in Ham radio, however. He was a member of the Reading Radio Club, and continued to communicate with other Hams all over the world until recently.
He worked for AT&T for over 35 years where he was involved in several revolutionary projects, including the development of radar during the second world war and later at Laureldale in managing the manufacture of the world's first high speed transistors. Other projects included: a new generation of undersea communications cables; the traveling wave tube or satellite transponder (used in every communications satellite to date); the light emitting diode; fiber optics and an early type of "picture phone."
He is survived by his three sons, Bruce, David and Richard Pomeroy, their wives, and three grandchildren, Samuel, Amanda and Robert Pomeroy.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Muhlenberg Township.
