Richard W. Horrigan, 84, of Reiffton, passed away on January 17, 2013, at his residence with his loving wife at his side. He was known as Dick, Uncle Dick, Dad, Granddad and friend to all.
He was the beloved husband of Dolores A. (Kreisher) Horrigan. They were married for 57years.
Born in Reading on October 15, 1928, he was a son of the late John F., Sr. and Madeline (Rauen) Horrigan.
Dick graduated from Reading Central Catholic High School in 1946, and Loyola University of Maryland in 1949, with a BS in Business Administration. He started his finance career after college with Horrigan Finance Inc.founded by his father John F. Horrigan Sr., in Reading PA.
Dick served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He returned to Horrigan Finance Inc. (later Horrigan American Inc.) after military service, and served as Vice Chairmanuntil its sale in 1996. Dick has always been involved in automobile finance and in 1970 Dick acquired the first of five automobile franchises, and was CEO of Dick Horrigan Volkswagen Inc. until his retirement in 1997. During his automobile career, Dick served as an officer of theAIADA, the American International Automobile Dealers Association, rising to Chairman in 1989.In addition to his business savvy, Dick's tireless work ethic, humble nature, and sense of fairness, created a work environment conducive to making all those around him successful.
More striking than Dick's success in business, was his devotion to his family, his love of children, his quick wit, patience, hisunflappable demeanor and his deference to everyone. Beyond his intrigue with automobiles, he had a love for tennis, fishing, the Phillies, chocolate, and a good beer.
Dick was a life-long member of St. Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church.Dick never focused on himself, but was always concerned with others and their needs. For these reasons, his battle with Parkinson's diseasewas initially not evident to many but his family. His spirit will live on in the hearts of the many people he has touched.
In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by three daughters: Cathleen, wife of Andrew Cahill, Sea Girt, NJ, Ann Louise, wife of Dennis Filloon, Tallahassee, FL, and Mary Kate, wife of John Ehlis, Montclair, NJ; six sons: Richard W. Jr., husband of Cynthia Horrigan, Greenwood Village, CO, Peter, husband of Stacey Horrigan, Greenwood Village, CO, David, husband of Pamela Horrigan, Mohnton, PA, James, husband of Beth Horrigan, Sinking Spring, PA, Matthew, husband of Melanie Horrigan, Montclair, NJ and Christopher, husband of Christa Horrigan, Brooklyn, NY.
Dick was predeceased by his grandson Matthew Cahill. He is survived by twenty-one grandchildren: Ryan Cahill, Erin Cahill, Daniel Horrigan, Rachel Horrigan, Claire Horrigan, Brett Filloon, Julia Filloon, Justin Horrigan, Brittany Horrigan, Nicole Krick , wife of Alex Krick, Paige Horrigan, Brooke Horrigan, Oliver Horrigan, husband of Adrienne, Madeline Horrigan, Adelaide Ehlis, Charles Ehlis , Benjamin Horrigan, Luke Horrigan, Peter Horrigan, Thomas Horrigan and Cecilia Horrigan; one great-grandson, Max Horrigan; two brothers, John F., Jr., husband of the late Peggy Horrigan, Wyomissing, PA, W. Michael Horrigan, Tavernier, FL.; five sisters, Mary, wife of Dr. Robert O'Connell, Limerick, PA., Theresa, wife of the late Robert Montgomery, Avalon, NJ, Margaret, wife of Michael Connelly, Philadelphia, PA, MadelineHorrigan, Durham, NC, and Dolores Sue, wife of Francis "Bud" Ozar, Grosse Point, MI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, 4975 Boyertown Pike, Reading, PA 19606. Entombment will be in Gethsemane mausoleum. Friends may call Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading, PA 19611.
