Richard E. Harris, 88, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 28, 2016.
He was born in Quincy, MA on December 12, 1927, the son of the late George and Susan Harris. Richard served proudly in the U.S. Army, serving in the Army of Occupation in Europe in 1946, the Invasion of Inchon in 1950, and the conflict in Vietnam in 1967. During his 26 year career, he earned the Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star among other decorations. He retired as a Command Sergeant Major. Richard was also an avid golfer and runner.
He is survived by his children Richard E. (Karen Barrett-Harris) Harris, Jr, Michael L. Harris, and Patrick E. (Sharon) Harris; grandchildren Nicole (Steven) Slobe, Michael (Christina) Harris, Shannon (Manuel) Elias, Kaitlyn Harris, and James Harris; great-grandchildren Sabrina, Andrew, Myla, Jared, and Riley; and by his sisters Hazel Spinney, Una Charney, and Lorraine Harris.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, daughter-in-law Marge Harris, and by his siblings Bertha Goodwin, George Harris, Gertrude Mapstone, and Ernie Harris.
A visitation will be held Thursday, February 4, 2016 from 4-6 p.m. in the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. Burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, RR #2, Box 484, Indiantown Gap Rd.,Annville, PA 17003-9618. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 301 Grant Street, Suite 900, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15219.
