Richard F. Goodwin, 82, of Lower Alsace Township, died February 7, 2014 in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading.
He was the husband of Martha E. (Behm) Goodwin, who he married September 22, 1954.
Born July 2, 1931 in Stony Creek Mills, he was a son of the late James and Esther (Faust) Goodwin.
Richard was a 1949 graduate of Mt. Penn High School. After graduation, he worked as a farmer for several years before making a career in the Navy, where he served for 22 years. A chief radioman, he was awarded the
Navy Achievement Medal for meritorious achievement as the Chief Petty Officer of the operations department while attached to the USS Mazama.
He was cited for his professional knowledge and his leadership in the communications field. After retiring from the Navy, Richard worked for American Bank for 25 years, retiring in 1996. Richard was a member of Bethany Church, Stony Creek as well as a life member of Stony Creek Athletic Association.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his three children: Lori Beth, wife of Robert J. Schlegel, of Stony Creek Mills; Craig R., husband of Susan A. Goodwin, of Cumru Township and Mark J. of Stony Creek Mills. Other survivors include five grandchildren. Richard was predeceased by his sister, Gloria Folk.
A memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Kuhn-Stitzel Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 423 Main Street, Oley, PA 19547. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Spies-Zion Cemetery, Alsace Township.
