Retired Colonel Richard Harry Auman, 72, died Friday, December 25, 2009 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, SC.

He was the husband of Susan (Herr) Auman. His first wife, Charlotte (Gulko) Auman died in 1992.

Born in Port Carbon, PA, he was the son of Mildred Harris Auman, Pottsville and the late Russell Auman.

Richard was a member of Osceola United Methodist Church. He was active in Civil War Roundtables, Crime Watch, Lifelong Learning and an avid Pickleball player.

Richard was Class President of the last graduating class from Port Carbon Soldier's Memorial High School in Port Carbon, PA. He bravely served with the US Army for two tours in Vietnam and retired from service as a Colonel. In the Army, he spent most of his time in Armor units and, toward the end of his career, leading a Military Police force, including those that supported the inauguration of Richard M. Nixon in January 1973. As a civilian, he served in various executive capacities in Security and Safety.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons: David, husband of Christine (Bassett) Auman, Richmond, VA and Kenneth, husband of Andi (Jones) Auman, Simsbury, CT. Also surviving are his step-daughters: Lisa (Herr), wife of Brent Ryhlick, Trabuca Canyon, CA and Karen (Herr), wife of Jesse Lopez, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. He was devoted to his family and left each of them with many lessons and memories.

Richard was blessed with nine grandchildren, Brendan Auman, Luke Bassett, Sadie Bassett, Matthew Ryhlick, Michael Ryhlick, Nicolas Lopez, Jordyn Lopez, Riley Charlotte Auman and Grayson Auman.

Friends may call Thursday 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home., Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Following the viewing, burial will be in Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven.
