Philip H. Haupt, III, 78 of Reading, passed away Friday, September 23, 2016 in Reading Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy I. (Dilliplane) Haupt, whom he married May 5, 1958.
Born in Shamokin, he was the son of the late Philip H. and Pearl (McCoy) Haupt.
He was a member of Epler's Church, Leesport.
In high school, he was an accomplished jazz pianist, playing in a national competition with the Shamokin High School Key club, as well in his own band the Stardusters.
He also was an accomplished timpani player, achieving state band designation while in high school.
During his Army Reserve service, he achieved the rank of Sergeant and was a tank commander in the M48 Patton.
Phil worked in corporate quality assurance for Hofmann Industries for 37 years.
Upon retirement from Hofmann Industries, Phil undertook the training at Berks Career and Technology Center to become a certified welder.
Phil was an incredibly active member of his community through many, many different organizations and often served in the capacities of Treasurer and President, among them the Schuylkill Valley Music League, Berks Bassmasters, West Central Berks Zone 4 and the consistory committee at Epler's church.
Phil was the Emergency Management Coordinator for Bern Township for over 15 years.
He was most proud of his service with the Greenfields Fire Company, not only serving as Treasurer for over 20 years - completing his service just earlier this year - but for his many years as both Assistant Chief and as Fire Police Lieutenant.
Phil never stopped learning and training, earning many certifications in all aspects of firefighting and fire ground operations.
Phil loved seeing his sons and grandchildren in numerous musical and sporting events throughout the years, and particularly enjoyed the fishing trips to Portland, Ontario Canada, especially when the grandchildren insisted on all going at once.
In addition to his wife, Phil is survived by two sons: Scott T., husband of Lori A. Haupt, Reading, and Kenneth A. Haupt, companion of Roberta "Bobbi" Long, Leesport. Four grandchildren: Brenton, Wyatt, Brynna and Graham Haupt, and two step-grandchildren: Alicia Himmelberger and Nathan Whitehead also survive him.
