Peter D. Archey, 70, passed away June 28, 2008 in his Reading residence.
He was the husband of Connie (Leadbetter) Archey, to whom he had been married for 43 years.
Born in Pittsfield, MA, he was the son of the late Henry and Ann (Colwell) Archey.
He earned his BA from College of the Holy Cross in 1959 and his MSW from Boston College in 1967.
Mr. Archey retired in 1999 from the position of Executive Director of the PA Association of Area Agencies on Aging. Previously, he served in various positions including Project Director with the PA Department of Health, Director of Administration, PA Health Care Cost Containment Council and Executive Director of the Health Systems Council of Eastern PA. He was the first Executive Director of the Berks County Office of Aging. He served as an Adjunct Faculty Member at the University of Scranton and Reading Area Community College.
As a volunteer, Mr Archey conducted community information sessions on Medicare part D prescription plans and PACE/PACENET/Part D coordination for the Berks County Office of Aging and Berks County Apprise Program. He provided individual counseling to seniors on Medicare Part D plan choices and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He was coach of the Brookline and East Ends teams in the City County Colt Baseball League. He served as host for BCTV programs: Inside Your District and Urban Prospectives and moderated League of Women Voters Candidates programs.
Peter was the recipient of the Heritage Senior Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
He was a member of Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Reading.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his sons, Peter Archey, Jr., of New York City, Michael T. Archey, husband of Trish, of Pembroke Pines, FL, Thomas J. Archey, husband of Mary, of Collegeville and Jack Archey, of Los Angeles, CA. There are five grandchildren, Jake, Michael, Emily, Matt and Kelly.
Other survivors include sisters, Mary Goodrich and Ann Vella, both of Pittsfield, MA and brothers, James and Thomas Archey, both of Pittsfield, MA and William Archey of Alexandria, VA. He was predeceased by three brothers, Richard, Joseph and John Archey and two sisters, Jeanette Herman and Doris Wilk.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Reading. Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the church, with eulogies beginning at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Peter's name may be made to BCTV, 645 Penn Street, Reading, PA 19601 or to RACC Scholarship Fund, P.O.
