Paul L. Sommers

Paul L. Sommers, Jr., 95, of Wyomissing, passed away on January 10, 2024 at Country Meadows. Born in Reading, he was the son of Paul L. Sommers, Sr. and Lillian E. (Purcell). Paul was the loving husband of Thelma L. (Scatchard) Sommers, with whom he shared 48 years of marriage.

Paul was a 1948 graduate of Reading High School. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Kutztown University, graduating in 1952 and then furthered his education at Temple University, where he earned his Master's in Education in 1955. He did post graduate work at Penn State, Tufts, Shippensburg and West Chester Universities. Paul dedicated 39 years to education. He first taught in a one room schoolhouse at Centerport. Later he taught and was a counselor at Reading and Wilson School Districts, from which he retired in 1991.

During his college years, Paul was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa National Education Fraternity, and the National Honor Society in Education. Paul was a member of the Spring Township Library Board, Knights of Columbus, Reading Public Museum, Berks County Historical Society, Amity Heritage Society, and Victor Emmanuel II Society. He served Berks County as the Secretary for the Reading Stadium Commission, financial chairman for the Mental Health And Developmental Disabilities Board, and as Treasurer, Vice-President, and President of the Wyomissing Public Library.

He had a passion for exploring the globe, having set foot on every continent except Antarctica. Some of his most cherished places included Bavaria, Germany, where he made six trips, and Ireland, which he adored so much that he visited it 14 times. Additionally, he traveled to all 50 states at least once, with Maine and Virginia as his favorites.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 11:30AM at St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church, 2810 St Albans Dr, Sinking Spring, PA 19608 with burial to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Ignatius RCC or the charity of your choice in Paul's memory.
