Paul R. Van Pelt, 94, formerly of Birdsboro, died Jan. 2 at 7:45 p.m. in Spruce Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, West Reading, where he had resided since May.
He had previously resided at the Green Hills Health Center, Cumru Township.
His wife, Florence E. (Delp) Van Pelt, died June 3, 1985.
Born in Gibraltar, he was a son of the late Howard and Rose (Kurtz) Van Pelt.
Van Pelt was employed for 40 years as a shoe cutter by Curtis, Stephens & Embry Shoe Co., Reading, retiring in 1967. He was also the owner of Van Pelt Stationery, Birdsboro, from 1985 to 1990.
He was employed as a driver for the Daniel Boone High School cafeteria for 15 years until 1982. Van Pelt was an independent contractor for Reading Eagle Company from 1974 to 1994.
Van Pelt was a past commander of the Birdsboro American Legion Post 626, Birdsboro.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Van Pelt was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Gibraltar.
He was one of the original members of the Civil Defense Council of Berks County.
Surviving is a son, Ronald P., Wyomissing.
Other survivors include a brother, Carl, Birdsboro.
There is also a granddaughter.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Gibraltar.
