ORIGINAL OBITUARY:
Paul William Brass, 93, of Wyomissing passed away Tuesday morning January 11, 2022, at the Highlands. Born on October 2, 1928 in Montclair, NJ, he was the son of the late Edward K. and Eleanor C. Brass. He was a loving husband, an amazing father and a much-loved grandfather. Paul was a role model for all, a wonderful man – kind-hearted and warm with a gentle sense of humor - a good friend to many, and always involved in his community. He took great pride in his children's and grandchildren's varied interests and achievements.
Paul is survived by his wife Margaret (Brackbill) of nearly 70 years and his daughters Jane B. Barth (Jack) of Corvallis, Oregon and Martha E. Brass (O'Ryan Arends) of London, England. He also is survived by his five grandchildren, Samantha, Emma, Hanna and Trevor Rocks and Alexander Barth, and his brother Tom. He was preceded in death by his daughter E. Cristy Rocks (Tony) and his brother Edward.
Paul graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. in 1950 and a MBA in 1951. He then served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was employed by Carpenter Technology in the financial department until his retirement.
Paul will be remembered as an active volunteer in his community and church. He was a long-time member of Atonement Lutheran Church, printing the weekly bulletin for many years. Paul served in multiple positions in the Wyomissing Borough for more than 45 years in total, including being the Treasurer for 33 years and on the Planning Commission for 40 years, serving as Chair for 26 of those years. He also was on Borough Council, Finance Committee, Infrastructure Committee, Police Pension Fund Committee, and Recreation Board.
Paul was an avid skier, only giving it up in his early 80s. He was a founding member of the Flying Dutchmen Ski Club through which he met many of his lifelong friends. Together they traveled to many places around the world. He was on the Ski Patrol at Sharp Mountain (Pottsville) and Heidelberg (Bernville) and is remembered by his children and grandchildren for taking them up and down the mountains between his legs – a long way to bend down for a man of over six feet tall!
Another lifelong passion was Eagles Mere, PA, where he spent his summers since his youth, having worked as a bell hop and boat boy at the resort's hotels in the 1940s. It was because of Eagles Mere that he met his wife Margaret, as her family also spent summers in this mountain community. He loved to play tennis, swim in the lake and chat with friends of all ages on the beach and on his front porch. He enjoyed hiking the local trails, and although he really didn't much care for golf, he regularly (and reluctantly) played in order to spend time with good friends and family and to enjoy the views!
A celebration of Paul's life will be planned for later this year. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Paul's memory are asked to consider a donation to an organization raising money for cancer research, Swim Across America - Baltimore, c/o Team Rock On, PO Box 5384, Baltimore, MD 21209
