Oliver G. "Ollie" Eyrich, former Reading High School athlete and a member of the Berks County Sports Hall of Fame, died May 5 at 6:57 p.m. in Spruce Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, West Reading, where he had resided since Nov. 5.

Eyrich, 84, West Reading, was the husband of Doris R. (Alban) Eyrich.

He was the first Berks County football player to make first-team all-state in 1940 with a Reading High team that went 8-1-1.

As a junior, Eyrich was the top scorer in the Big 15 Conference with 17 touchdowns.

A track star, he led Reading High to a victory in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Eyrich completed his high school career in Newport News, Va., where he was also an all-state athlete.

He was inducted into the local sports hall of fame in 1999 for his football abilities. Eyrich was also named to the Berks County Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Warren D. and Stella (Edwards) Eyrich.

Eyrich was employed for 37 years as a car salesman by Morganstern, Emerson and Marshall Chevrolet, all of Reading, retiring in 1984.

He was one of the founders of the West Reading midget football program.

Eyrich is also survived by a son, W. Dewey, Louisville, Colo.; and two daughters, Olivia L. (Eyrich) Peterson and Elizabeth A. (Eyrich) Stouffer, both of Fort Collins, Colo.

Other survivors include two brothers, William and George, both of Reading.

There are also six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the Berks Visiting Nurse Association 1170 Berkshire Blvd. Wyomissing, Pa 19610. Services will be private. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
