Neil C. Hill

Neil Charles Hill, Lower Alsace Township, died Oct. 15, 2010, in Berkshire Center, Exeter Township, just after celebrating his 83rd birthday with his family. He was the loving husband of Dorothy H. (Holl) Hill, whom he married on June 17, 1950. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary this summer with family and friends.

A lifelong resident of Reading, Neil was born Oct. 13, 1927. He was a son of the late Henry Bernhart and Florence Edith (Miller) Hill.

Neil was a 1945 graduate of Reading High School and a 1951 graduate of Albright College, where he earned a B.S. degree in business administration. He was a member of the Albright College Alumni Association. He was the current chairman of the local alumni and 50+ clubs, and served as alumni representative on the Board of Trustees.

Neil served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard during the Korean Conflict. In 1946 he volunteered as a member of Task Force Williwaw, stationed on Adak, in the Aleutian Islands.

He was employed as a sales counselor with Firestone Plastics, Hooker Chemicals and Geiger Brothers.

Neil was very active in service to his community. This included eight years as Lower Alsace Township supervisor, where he also held the position of tax collector for two terms. Neil was active in the Reading Rotary Club where he served as both president and secretary. He was an advocate for education, serving on the board of directors of the Berks County Intermediate Unit. Neil also served on the Mount Penn School Board for 17 years. He proudly presented diplomas to each of his five children when they graduated.

He was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing. He taught Sunday school, chaired the ushering team and served previously as President of Church Council. He was also on the finance committee.

In addition to his wife, Neil is survived by his four children: Margaret, wife of Timothy Hoover, Milford, Pa.; Christine, wife of Richard Diamond, Ocala, Fla.; Curtis, husband of Stephanie Hill, Lower Alsace Township; and Patricia, wife of Patrick Boyer, Fairfax Station, Va. There are also six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Neil was predeceased by his daughter, Dr. Kathryn H. DeTurck, who died in 2005.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. in Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Blvd., Wyomissing, PA 19610. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services in the church. Burial will be private in Fairview Cemetery, Shillington.
